Around the Creek - Creek Kids Version

We are already two months into the new year, spring is just a week away, and I still find myself thinking about the message in the Awakening series, when Pastor Marty declared, 2011 had the potential to be the very best year ever.

He got my attention when he said, for some, God had placed dreams inside of you, you've prayed, you've believed, you have felt that you are making no forward progress, and you feel frustrated and stuck. That season is coming to a close, and a new one is around the bend. And then, he posed the question: "What are you doing to prepare for it?"

One of the ways that Pastor Marty challenged us to prepare for this new season, was to clean the clutter out of our lives. I don't know about you, but I took this very seriously. I cleaned every part of my house, getting rid of everything from clothes that didn't fit and wished they did to exercise equipment that was taking up valuable space. When he said there was money everywhere in my house, I, went searching for it. While going through pants pockets of clothes that were now designated "Good Will", I was surprised to find $26.00, which for me is a weeks worth of Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki at Subway. I was happy, very happy.

I even heard through the Stevens Creek Grape Vine that Pastor Marty was challenged by this message as well. Following that service he went home and cleaned out his car and found enough change to fill an entire Ziplock bag. (I wonder if that was a gallon size or quart size. Hmm!) Anyway, he gave his Ziploc bag of change to Sarah to put in our Stevie Tithing Box, which makes me wonder, how much change do my fellow Creekers' have laying around their houses.

Our resident and favorite weatherman, Jeff Rucker, says, "High pressure brings mild and dry air for the weekend. Sunny skies are expected Saturday and Sunday. Highs in the low to mid 70's" It's a great day to clean our cars and look for all spare change under the seats and floor mats. Pull off those cushions from the sofa, love seat, and chair and look for hidden treasures, I bet there's a couple dollars to be found there. And, here's your challenge:

Grab a couple of Ziploc bags
Fill them with all the change you have found laying around the house
Bring them to the Creek tomorrow and let your child fill Stevie the Tithing Box

I can't wait to see Stevie filled to over flowing! Let's clean the out the clutter, prepare for a new season, and fill Stevie!

A couple of weeks ago I was scrolling down through the Creek Kids Facebook page and one particular status caught my attention. I pulled my hand back from the mouse and read these words over and over; "Being a parent is by far the hardest thing I have ever done; with that being said, being a parent is my GREATEST JOY."

I guess I had never really thought about it that way before, but as I sat there and let those words roll around in my heart, I began to realize how true they really were.

As kids we spend five years in elementary school, three years in middle school, four years in high school and many choose to continue on to spend four additional years in college. Education prepares us to be successful in a field of our choosing, but what prepares us to be parents? Parenting, arguably, the most important job one could ever have, but no amount of education could ever prepare you for.

God brought back to my remembrance that status update this week, as I sat in the dentist office with my 18 year old. A weekend toothache that would lead to emergency surgery to remove all four wisdom teeth was not on my agenda for the week, but sometimes God has a way of changing our plans. I took the next couple of days off from work so that I could be home to take care of him and as I did I began to notice how much I enjoyed it. My heart was overwhelmed with joy as I cooked special foods for him, brought him his medicine, and propped his pillows.

As I look back over the years of raising two boys, I remember the many times when they would cry and I didn't know why or what to do and the times they would wake in the middle of the night with a fever and nothing seemed to bring it down. As the years passed and they got older the problems were still there, but the solution was and is always the same, prayer.

There may not be a school to teach us how to be a Mom or Dad, but there is one whose skills as a parent surpass all others. When the baby cries and nothing seems to bring him comfort, when a problem presents itself and you don't know the answer, or when you just need a hug or a word of encouragement our Father in Heaven promises that He will be there. He is the perfect parent, He will never leave us or forsake us, He will comfort us in difficult times, He will encourage you, and He will provide the answer when you don't know what to do.

God has given us as parents the greatest and MOST IMPORTANT job on earth, to love and teach our children. It is by far the hardest job we will ever have, but when we look into our children's eyes, we can't help but see the GREATEST JOY they have brought to our lives.

Awakening for Creek Kids

What better way to begin a new year than to begin with prayer and fasting. Pastor Marty has invited each of us to participate along side of him, the staff, and leadership of Stevens Creek in a 21 day season of prayer and fasting, called Awakening. During this time we have set aside time to focus our energy as a church body toward seeking God and positioning our church and leadership for maximum effectiveness. Awakening is not just a a seasonal campaign, Awakening is about establishing a culture of prayer, fasting and personal devotion within our church and within our lives.

One of the best ways to teach our children, is to simply model the behavior we desire to see in them. Over the next 21 days we have a great opportunity to model and teach our kids about fasting and prayer. So over the next few weeks during Creek Kids, we will break fasting and prayer down to a level that the kids will understand and encourage them to put it into practice.

We have provided an Awakening calendar designed with your child in mind. It contains a daily Bible reading and items they can fast on that day. This is a great way for them to learn about fasting and as they continue to do this you will be helping them cultivate a lifestyle of fasting and personal devotion in their own lives.

Around the Creek - Creek Kids Version

As a child, I couldn't wait till Christmas Day, the anticipation of unwrapping gifts caused me to lose sleep and do things, like coercing my brother to peek with me, that I wouldn't normally do at any other time of year. I remember one particular Christmas when my brother and I decided to open all our gifts days before Christmas then re-wrap them before my Mother noticed. Had it not been for the fact that we lacked experience in the re-wrapping department, I do believe we would have gotten away with it. The following year, to our dismay, gifts were taped from edge to edge so that on Christmas Day we had to use a knife to get into them.

Now that a 'few' years have passed since childhood, Christmas has taken on an entire new meaning. I have kids of my own and while being on the receiving end is always nice, the excitement I get from giving a gift completely outweighs being on the receiving end.

This time of year always causes me to think about the greatest gift ever given. "God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16 There is not a present under the tree that could ever compare with the gift that God gave, when he gave to us his only Son in the form of a baby. A baby that would set us free and bring us hope, joy, peace, and the greatest love ever known to man.

This year, before the wrapping paper is torn from any gift, take a moment to share with your children the greatest gift ever given and thank God for sending his one and only Son so that we could have eternal life.

Pre-School
The entire month of December we have learned that Jesus is God's Son and He wants to be our friend. This week God sends angels to local shepherds t announce that Jesus, the Messiah, has been born. The shepherds quickly go and see Jesus. They tell everyone the good news that Jesus has been born. This Sunday Creek Kids celebrate that Jesus is born!

Elementary

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Wise Men from the East saw a star marking His birth and followed it. When they arrived in Jerusalem, they asked King Herod where to find Jesus. Herod told them to go to Bethlehem and when they found the child, to back and tell him where Jesus was. Herod was jealous and intended to harm Jesus. The Wise Men found Jesus and gave Him gifts to worship Him. God warned them in a dream not to return to Herod, so they went back to their home by another route.

This Sunday, Elementary Creek Kids will learn that Jesus is the greatest gift and giving to others brings extraordinary joy!

Stevie's Christmas Gift

This Sunday our pre-school Creek Kids will decorate and fill shoe boxes for some of our less fortunate right here in Augusta. All pre-schooler should come dressed in their favorite Christmas PJ's and come prepared to celebrate the gift of giving.

Thanks to everyone who have donated items to fill shoe boxes.

We have plenty of items for the kids, but still need adult socks, toiletry items, gloves, and hats.

Don't forget to bring your shoe boxes, if you don't have a shoebox,

a plain gift bag will work as well.

Around the Creek - Creek Kids Version

It is always this time of year when I love to hear the song, "Mary Did You Know." Only a few notes of the song needs to be played before it stops me in my tracks and I am overwhelmed with awe.

I imagine the first time Mary held her baby was much like the first time you and I held our own children. We gazed into their eyes, pulled back the blankets to be sure sure he had all his fingers and toes, and then examined closely the color and amount of hair he had. As she held her new baby on that first Christmas night, I wonder if she knew that he had come to save and make us new.

This month we celebrate the birth of Jesus, so take time to read the Christmas story to your child and create moments to talk about how and why He came to us. He is God's gift to us!

This week we hear how God sends an angel to tell Mary she will have a son. The angel tells her that His name will be Jesus and He will be God's Son.

It's an exciting month as we meet The Stars of Christmas and our first one to walk the red carpet is Mary. The Christmas season is in full swing at the Creek. Decorations are being hung, parties are being planned, and Silent Night can now be heard throughout the building. For many, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year and it comes with wonderful memories of Christmases past and and the anticipation of Christmases to come. Yet for others the season is filled with cares, concerns, and even emptiness and despair.

This month, our Creek Kids will hear about the reason for the season; the birth of a baby. A baby that would bring hope and salvation to the world. So invite your friends and encourage your children to invite theirs as well, because this year at the Creek it's a Christmas With Hope!

This week is a great week to talk to your child about the many different people God gives him to help him. If you're on your way to school, talk about how God gave him a teacher to help him. If you're on your way to soccer or baseball practice, talk about how God gave him a coach to help him. If you're on you're way to the grocery store talk about how God have him a cashier or bagger to help him. No matter where you are going talk about the people God gave him.

We continue to talk about Elijah, but this Sunday we meet the widow who is about to prepare what she thinks may be her last meal. Elijah asks her to bring him some even before she feeds her own son or herself. We will see what happens as the widow does as Elijah asks.

What an awesome week! Our Creek Kids owned the stage Wednesday night during their performance of Live It Out!

As I watched our kids dance and sing with absolute abandonment, I couldn't help but get just little prideful. I began to reflect back to the many school and church music programs I have attended, for my own kids, over the years, and I remember sitting there with smile on my face, a tear in my eye, and a camera in my hand. It didn't matter to me that chorus was a little off key, or the star of the show stumbled over his lines, that was my child and in my eyes he could do no wrong.

My reflection reminded me of how much God loves us. It doesn't matter what we look like, what our social status is, or what mistakes we have made over our lifetime; He just loves us. There is nothing we can do to make Him love us any less or stop loving us altogether. He loves us and when He looks at us He can't help, but get a twinkle in His eye, and a smile on His face. His love is unconditional; we don't have to do anything to get Him to love us. His love is wide, His love is deep, and His love is everlasting. To most of us, we can't comprehend that kind of love, but He not only wants us to comprehend it, He wants us to experience it.

Paul wrote in Ephesians 3:16-19
I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grown down into God's love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Our pre-school Creek Kids are going to hear the story of Elijah and how he was fed by the ravens. They will learn how God takes care of Elijah. He provides a brook for water to drink and ravens to bring him meat and bread to eat.

It is week two of uniqueness, learning more about others so you can know more about yourself, and this week we will meet a man named Mr. Nobody. Mr. Nobody - aka Gideon - battles the Midianites.

Take a moment to discuss with your child how God made everybody a somebody. But most of us have felt like nobodies before. Ask them if they have ever felt that way. If so, what can things can they do about it?

We Shine Wall of Fame

Creek Kids and parents LOVED the We Shine wall, so we have a bit of news for you. We are leaving it up until the 28th for everyone to enjoy. All stars can be picked up at the Creek Kids check-in desk on Sunday December 5th.

Sole4Souls

Our shoe drive officially ended October 24th, but because the Creek has so many generous people, shoes have continued to pour in. We appreciate your willingness to donate to such a wonderful cause! This Sunday will be the LAST day that shoes will be accepted. Thank you to everyone who donated shoes!

November! I can't believe it's here already! Seems like yesterday we were ringing in the new year and now, here we are thinking about turkey and dressing once again.

November happens to be one of my favorite months. I have many wonderful memories of all my family sitting around the table eating together, but most of all I like to sit at my computer, with one of my favorite worship songs playing and type out a list of all the things I have to be thankful for. There have been times in my life that I have thought that I had nothing to be thankful for, but as I sat down and began to compile my list I found that I had more than I realized.

As christian parents it is our responsibility to cultivate character traits in our children like thankfulness. One of the best ways to do this is to just simply walk it out in front them. When something good takes place in our lives, we need to thank God out loud. Our kids need to see us modeling our appreciation to God, our families, friends, and even those we work with. Another very practical way is to pull out the crayons and pencils and let them draw or write on paper what they are thankful for.

This month take a day to write down all the many things you are thankful for, give God the praise and the honor for all that He has done, and cultivate an atmosphere of thankfulness in your home, because He is good, He really is!

Around the Creek - Creek Kids Version

If I heard it once, I had heard it twice out of my grandmother's mouth, "There's no use crying over spilled milk." I didn't really understand the full meaning of that saying until I had children of my own and I found myself repeating those very words to my own kids. It seemed each time we sat to the dinner table something was getting spilled or a plate of something would overturn onto the floor. There were days, as a mother, that I thought they would never grow up and then I would hear my grandmother's voice sing out those words, "There's no use crying over spilled milk."

It's not always the spilled milk; sometimes its the messy rooms, the permanent marker that "mysteriously" covered the walls, or the 13 times your child wakes you in the middle of the night wanting a drink. Raising children can sometimes be challenging and there is a tendency to get discouraged, but just remember that all those glasses of spilled milk will one day fade into a distant memory and they will return as a wonderful story that will bring a chuckle to your soul and a smile to your face.

The Creek Kids will bring the children's musical, Live It Out to the main stage of Stevens Creek on Wednesday, November 10th! This is a performance you won't want to miss! We are so proud of our Creek Kids for the hard work they have been doing as they prepare for their big debut.

Fall Festival/Friend Day

Get excited and jump up and down, Sunday, November 7th is Friend Day and the Fall Festival at Stevens Creek Church and we're doing it up BIG! We've got inflatables, caramel apples, games, face painting, prizes, and LOTS more! This is a great opportunity to teach your Creek Kid how to invite one of their friends to church, so that they can hear the Good News of how much Jesus loves them.

Soles4Souls Update

Our Soles4Souls shoe drive has come to an end, and we are excited to let you know that our Augusta and Grovetown Creek Kids collected 92 pairs of shoes! The shoes collected will be given to the Soles4Souls organization, where they will be distributed to people much less fortunate than you and I. Partnering with this organization not only gave our Creek Kids the ability to help change the world, one pair at a time, but it also taught them how to serve the world.

Anytime the word "investment" is mentioned in my home, I have to admit, I cringe. I don't know a lot about the stock market or how it works, but being able to comfortably retire one day has motivated me to learn. So recently, my husband and I sat down with a financial advisor who looked at where we are, discussed our goals, and showed us the many investment options we had to help meet our goals.

As I think about all the people in the world that I consider successful, people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, I wonder what kind of financial investments they made in order to obtain the great wealth they enjoy today. How much did it cost them because as I quickly learned making an investment does cost and I want to invest in the things that bring me a high rate of return.

My time in "Investing 101" got me thinking about my greatest investment - my kids. In these times of economic uncertainty I can think of no better place to invest my time and resources than in the lives of my children. The Bible says, "Children are a gift from the Lord." ; children are the greatest investments God has given to us.

So this week as we spend time with our children, remember that time with your children will yield a high rate of return. It is a wise choice that can make a difference in their future and in the future of their children.

Pre-School
It's gonna be another exciting week in pre-school as we learn about Joshua and the battle of Jericho. We're going to find out how many times God tells Joshua and Israel's army to march around the wall before the walls come tumbling down. Was it the amount of times that brought the walls down? Was it the blowing of the horns and shouting that did it? Be sure to ask your Creek Kid after church on Sunday to find out the answer!

Around the Creek - Creek Kids Version

This month our pre-school kids have been learning a lot about trusting God. It seems children are born with no fears and a unique ability to trust everyone. As we experience life we encounter opportunities to develop fear, but God's Word tells us in Deuteronomy 31:6 to, "Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid."

How much do we really trust God? I mean really trust Him. Does the fear of not knowing what will happen keep us from following God whole heartedly? We've all been there. Fear is a very powerful emotion. There are those who just seem to jump in, believing God is there and then there are those that sometimes doubt and ask God, "What if" questions.

There are so many heroes in the Bible, the many great men and women who didn't seem to ever doubt in their hearts that God would come through for them. As parents we have an opportunity to be a true hero in our children's eyes by trusting totally the ONE true God. We can begin today following God no matter what the cost, so that when our child thinks back he will remember us as parents who followed God despite all fears. A true superhero.

Pre-School
Rahab hides spies from Israel's army in her home to keep them safe. They tell her to hang a red scarf from her window to keep her safe during battle. We will learn that God keeps Rahab safe and he will keep us safe too.

Elementary

It's a Crime Seen this week! Nehemiah helps the poor. Our Creek kids will learn when they see a need not to wait for someone else to help with it, but to do it ourselves.

The Live It Out children's musical is less than a month away and the rehearsals are going great! This past Wednesday night we handed out invite cards to the kids, if you did not receive yours, go to any Creek Kids check-in desks and pick up a couple.

Don't forget to bring in those new or gently worn shoes for our Soles4Souls program. The last Sunday to bring shoes in is Sunday, October 24th. Creek Kids are seeing a need and doing something about it!

Creek Kids Weekly Update

The Bible is full of stories of people who did some pretty amazing and heroic deeds. Daniel, Esther, Joshua...they all chose to put their fears aside and follow God. Could this be your child one day? Will they become the kind of person that has the courage to say no to their fears and yes to God? It's possible. The same God who helped the people in the Bible is ready to help your child too. Our prayer is for your child to know that he can always count on God to give him the strength and courage to do the right thing.

Pre-School
Last Sunday our pre-school Creek Kids learned about Elijah and the fire. We learned that there is only ONE true God and we should worship Him. This Sunday is going to be so exciting as we check out Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These three men will not bow down and worship the king's idol and as punishment they are thrown into a fiery furnace. We are going to find out just how God saves them from the fire.

How is your child doing with his/her memory verse? We will continue to work on that Sunday, look for those opportunities at home, in the car, or even bathtime to speak these great words over your child

Elementary
The elementary kids were excited as we introduced Nehemiah to them, and we will continue to learn more about him this Sunday. This week Nehemiah goes to Jerusalem and we learn that someone's gotta do it.

Our word of the month is INITIATIVE: seeing what needs to be done and doing it. As we learn about Nehemiah we will see his initiative to rebuild a wall.

Soles4Souls

Initiative

seeing something that needs to be done and doing it

During the month of October our Creek Kids in grades K-5th, 1st-5th in Grovetown, are learning about initiative. In an effort to help the kids understand what this truly means and how it relates to them we have teamed up with Soles4Souls.

Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you. The charity distributes these shoes free of charge to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 10 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes. The shoes have been distributed to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States.

Each Sunday through October 24, Creek Kids will be collecting gently used or new shoes in shoe boxes to give to Soles4Souls for distribution. If you don't have a shoebox, don't worry just bring your shoes and we will provide a box for you.

We look forward to seeing how many lives Creek Kids will be able to change, one pair at a time!

Have you ever thought about the fact that God chose you to be the parent of your child? He knew exactly what your child needed in a parent, and He chose you. He knows your strengths and weaknesses, and your amazing capacity to love. And, He gave you this child. God is there-every minute of every day-guiding you through this parenting journey. He has a story of love and redemption to tell your child through you. He wants your child/ren to know their Heavenly Father is there to help them, just like He's there to help you - every step of the way.

Pre-School Parents
During the month of October we continue teach the basic truth that God loves me. We want each of our Creek Kids to know that they can ALWAYS count on God. This week we are excited to bring the story of Elijah and the fire to life for them. We will learn how Elijah challenges King Ahab to a test to see whose God is real. They both build altars and pray for fire to come from heaven. God proves He is the ONE true God and all of the people worship Him.

We also have a memory verse that we will be learning together:

Bible memorization is a great way to get the Word into our children's hearts. So look for opportunities at home when you can talk your child about their memory verse.

Elementary Parents
Last month we learned about respect and this month were learning about initiative; seeing what needs to be done and doing it. Our Creek Kids will take a journey into the life of Nehemiah and the great task that he takes on rebuilding the wall. We begin this week by introducing the kids to Nehemiah and how he hears about the wall. This will be an exciting journey for them!

The bottom line
When there's a job to be done, first you have to see it.

Pre-School
By the time your child is five years old, we want them to know three basic truths:

God made me
God loves me
Jesus want to be my friend forever

We spent the month of September focusing on the the second of these three basic truths, God loves me. We learned that God loves us loves us all the time, he never stops.

Pre-school will continue to learn that God loves them in the month of October and that they can ALWAYS count on God. Each week we will post something onto our twitter and facebook pages that you can do at home with your child to reinforce what they are learning during their time in Creek Kids.

Pre-school has memory verses, and we realize that some of the younger ones can't memorize yet, but they are not too small to get it into their hearts so as you are holding them or rocking them speak God's word to them.

Creek Kids - A world where kids meet Jesus on their level!

The sounds of children splashing in the pool has now been replaced by the ringing of school bells and moms and dads can finally say good-bye to late nights and hello to that early bedtime. I can hardly believe that summer vacations are over and another school year is back in session. Soon the the tempurtures will drop, the leaves will begin to turn and fall will be upon us. I am so excited about what this season will hold for Creek Kids!

Creek Kids has started practicing for Live It Out, a musical they will present on Wednesday, November 10th at 7 p.m. at the Augusta campus. Over fifty Creek Kids auditioned for vocal, dance and speaking roles! There will also be a chorus, and we want all Creek Kids to take part. There is a place for every child in this musical. If your child is interested in taking part in Live It Out, it’s not too late. All rehearsals will take place during Wednesday worship. Pick up a registration form, fill it out and turn it in, then join the fun every Wednesday night as we learn what it means to Live It Out.

Creek Summer Camp

It's hard to believe that summer is here and so is Creek Summer Camp! In just a few short weeks we will be taking children to an overnight camp in Homer, GA. Our goal is to introduce campers to an environment where they are challenged spiritually and physically. Campers are also given opportunities to sharpen their character and experience authentic relationships with fellow campers and our Creek Kids leaders.

Hello Creek Kids and Parents!

WOW! I cannot believe school is almost out for summer. We are really excited about the upcoming Church Camp for our elementary Creekers. What a great week that will be. We will be leaving with the age 6-2nd graders on June 28th and returning on July 1st, and the 3rd – 5th graders will leave on July 5th and return July 9th. We have been to this camp before and it is fantastic. We will be swimming, water sliding, riding horses, canoeing, and growing our kids in God’s Love. I cannot wait.

This month’s Virtue Word is Patience! We have been learning to patient with God’s Plan for our lives. Joshua had to be patient in getting to the Promise Land. The Israelites had to be patient while waiting on Moses to come down from the mountain with the Ten Commandments. We are learning it is not easy being patient but God will reward us with his perfect plan if we are patient

Don’t forget parents; if you have a kid that is having trouble getting up on Sunday mornings let me know and we can provide a creative wake up service called the ‘The Rude Awakening”’ Ask your child about it, they can fill you in on the details.

Honesty

I’m excited to spend the next several weeks talking about honesty and some of the very practical reasons that God teaches and guides us to be honest:

When you're not truthful, you hurt the people you should care about most. Joseph is sold by his brothers and they tell lies to cover it up.

(Genesis 37:45)

Lying to hurt someone else really hurts YOU. Haman's deceitful plot backfired on him. (Esther 3:5,7)

Truthfulness builds friendships; dishonesty tears them down. Jesus gave even wee, little, fraudulent Zacchaeus a do-over. (Luke 19)

You can lie so much you forget what matters. Disloyal Judas forgot, or deceived himself, about what matters most.

(Matthew 26:27)

As a mother of two boys, teaching them to be honest speaks right to my heart. I want to teach them and your children that honest thoughts, words and actions weave together to strengthen trusting, happy relationships with others and God. Dishonesty creates a web of deception! This deception will weave a web that ensnares us, tearing at the fabric of our relationships with others and God.

So if you find a spider ring on their finger or a spider in their pocket this month know it’s all about teaching them to be careful about what they weave.

Monday Morning Reflection

Monday mornings are always a time of reflection on the weekend services. I ask myself three questions 1) What did we do GREAT 2) What was just OK 3) How could we do it BETTER. As a part of this process I go into our environments and look at the curriculum baskets and gather any notes that the leaders have left for me. This past Monday I found this Valentine from one of our students, Keeley Apple.

This month our elementary students are learning about honor. Each week we are looking at what God says about honor and what it looks like to live in honorable ways.

Honor others more than yourself. (1 Samuel 2:30)
Honor those who are overlooked (Romans 12:10)
Honor those who are over you. (Ephesians 6:2-3)
Honor God out loud. (2 Samuel 6:21-22)

Based on this Valentine from Keeley, it appears we are doing GREAT in communicating God's word to our students. Thank you Keeley for applying God's word and showing honor to your leaders!

GodTime in 2010

Parents,

We are so excited to introduce GodTime to our Creek Kids! Our plan for 2010 is to focus on spiritual disciplines such as Bible reading and memorizing Scripture. We want to help children understand that the Bible is not boring or overwhelming when it’s read just a little every day and they can begin now – even when they’re young!

Each month we will give all of our kids a GodTime card, which will have verses and activities designed to help teach your child to apply scriptures individually. Please check the blog at www.creekkidsministry.com to watch a video your child will be seeing in their Creek Kids environments. It will provide more detail and go more in depth with this reading plan. Bible Story: A Little Help from My Friends (Jesus heals a paralyzed man) • Luke 5:17-26

Bottom Line: Friends who trust God work together to change lives.

The last couple of weeks we've been helping kids discover that (1) cooperation is working together to do more than you can do alone. We've focused on the "more than you can do alone" part and the fact that we need to look for ways to help others succeed. Children also need to understand that cooperation can require plain old hard work and determination. Remember that group of guys who CARRIED their friend to Jesus? "When they couldn't find a way in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof, removed some tiles, and let him down in the middle of everyone, right in front of Jesus" (Luke 5:19, The Message). They believed that Jesus could help their buddy, and they weren't going to let physical obstacles or a defeatist attitude get in their way. Their faith in Jesus was bold, and He was impressed by it. So this week, in addition to reminding kids that (2) God invented cooperation and that (3) He wants us to work together, help them understand that when they and other God followers trust in Him, (4) the ultimate result is changed lives—theirs as well as others.

This Week at Home:
This month we are applying what we are learning (working together to do more than you can do alone) by purchasing mosquito nets for children in Africa. Ask your child about it! Last week we were able to buy ten nets.

Preschool - "My Diggin Adventure"

Your preschooler learned in Large Group on their adventure up a pretend mountain about a man named Elijah. They discovered how God took care of Elijah.

Need to Know: God takes care of us.

Key Concept with motions: God (point up) takes care of us.

Bible Summary: I Kings 16, 17:1-6 After Solomon died many kings ruled in Israel. Some were bad kings. They did not follow God. When Ahab was king, God told Elijah, the prophet, what He wanted Ahab to do. Since King Ahab disobeyed and did not do what God told him, there was no rain or food for a long time. God took care of Elijah by using ravens to send him food.

Bible verse: “He cares for you.” I Peter 5:7b

This Week At Home: God cared for Elijah by sending birds to bring him food. Ask your child what else that God did to take care of Elijah? (Hint…God provided water by the brook so that Elijah would have water). We learned that God takes care of us.

Bible Story: Helping Hands (Joshua wins the battle over the Amalekites) • Exodus 17:8-13

Bottom Line: Look for ways to help somebody succeed.

This week’s Bible lesson is another great example of (1) cooperation, working together to do more than you can do alone: Joshua leading his army in victory over the Amalekites. Joshua, of course, was not the only player here. The Israelite foot soldiers, their commanders, Moses—(2) God worked through them all in big and spectacular ways to bring about victory. As long as Moses held up the staff of God, the Israelites gained ground. If he let the staff sag, the Israelites started losing. But there was a problem: “Moses’ hands got tired. So they got a stone and set it under him. He sat on it and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side. So his hands remained steady until the sun went down. Joshua defeated Amalek and its army in battle” (Exodus 17:12-13, The Message). Aaron and Hur came up with two simple solutions, really. Something for Moses to sit on and a way to prop up his arms. Not as impressive, perhaps, as what others were doing to win the battle, but certainly key! (3) And something that God surely wants kids to understand: sometimes being cooperative means looking for ways—even small, simple ways—to help someone else succeed. (4) When we do, we all “win.”

Frequently Asked Questions About the Nursery

Do you have a private place for me to nurse my baby?
We have a Nursing Mothers Room available for moms and babies. This is a ‘Moms Only’ room for women who are nursing their babies or whose babies are too young to enter our nursery. This is a quite environment with comfortable chairs to view the service. Please stop by the check-in desk and one of our volunteers will check you and your baby into the Nursing Mothers Room.

How old does my baby need to be to attend the nursery?
Our nursery rooms are open to babies who are twelve weeks old and have completed their first round of immunizations.

How do I know when to move my baby to the next room?
Our nursery rooms are based on a baby’s agility and are divided into three rooms (nursery, toddlers and 2’s). As your child progresses in his or her ability to explore, let our check-in volunteers know and they will assign him or her to the appropriate room. We ask parents not to move their child unless it’s been approved by one of our check-in volunteers.

Will my child have the same caregiver each week?
Our volunteers are committed to providing the most excellent experience for babies week after week. That means that they serve in the same room at the same service every week or every other week as their schedule permits.

How will you contact me if my child needs me?
If our children’s ministry staff needs to reach you during the service, your number on your identification tag will appear on the video screen in the main service and throughout the lobby.

What is the volunteer-child ratio in the nursery rooms?
Ratios of volunteers to babies have been established to maintain a fun and safe nursery environment. We average a 1:3 ratio for infants and crawlers, 1-4 ratio for toddlers and 2 year olds.

What if my baby cries?
We understand that for some babies separation from loved ones can be difficult. We strive to make that transition as smooth as possible. If your child cries for an extended period of time, we will page you from the service unless you instruct us otherwise.

What measures have you taken to provide a secure environment for my baby?
When you drop off your child in our nursery, we understand that you are entrusting us with your most precious possession. All our volunteers have cleared a federal background check and have been interviewed by our staff. Security volunteers are also stationed in our children’s area. No unauthorized adults are allowed to enter our nursery rooms. Children in our care will be released only to the adult bearing the matching parent identification tag.

What if I lose my parent identification tag?
A replacement tag can be issued at the check-in area with proof of identification (photo ID).

Your preschoolers will hear about Samuel, the prophet, anointing David to be the next king. David, the shepherd boy, loved and worshiped God.

Need to Know: God wants us to love and worship Him.

Motions: God wants us to love (hug yourself) and worship (pump arms in the air) Him.

Bible Summary: I Samuel 16; II Samuel 5–7 King Saul continued to disobey God, so God told Samuel, the prophet, to find a new king. He told Samuel to go to the home of Jesse, who had eight sons. God wanted one of them to be the next king. Samuel found young David and anointed him as the new king. David loved God and sang praises to God throughout his whole life. He helped gather materials for the king after him to build a temple where people could come and worship God.

Bible Verse: “. . . Give thanks to Him and praise His name.” Psalm 100:4b

This Week at Home: Play a game with you preschooler to see if they remembered the Bible story. It’s a game of true or not true. Say, “Let’s remember the Bible story by playing a true or not true game. When I say something that’s true and happened in the story, you put your thumbs up (demonstrate) and say, ‘true!’ But when I say something that is not true about the story, put your thumbs down and say, ‘not true!’” (Demonstrate.)

TELL the children the following statements and ask them to respond:

(2) If you’ve ever given this much thought, you’ve probably never considered “cooperative” as one of God’s characteristics. He doesn’t need us, after all, to get His work done. But aren’t you glad He gives us the privilege of being part of His big plan? Aren’t you glad He guides our efforts, combines them with others’ work, and then brings about an outcome that could only result from His hand? Nehemiah and the rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem is a great example: “It had taken fifty-two days. When all our enemies heard the news and all the surrounding nations saw it, our enemies totally lost their nerve. They knew that God was behind this work” (Nehemiah 6:15, The Message). What an exciting thing, to be a part of something undoable that God made doable! (3) That’s just one reason God wants us to cooperate that kids need to understand: when we cooperate, God can do some amazing things through us (4) to change the world around us.

As we begin a new series your preschoolers will travel to the mountains for an exciting adventure. They will hear how God works in the lives of His people.

Bible Summary: I Samuel 1–2:11, 2:18-21 Hannah was very sad because she had no children. Every year, Hannah went to the Tabernacle and prayed that God would bless her with a child. One year, Hannah told God if He blessed her with a baby, she would dedicate the baby’s life to God. After Hannah went home, God blessed her with a baby. She named him Samuel. Later, Samuel grew up to be a prophet of God.

Review: We have all been gifted in different ways. Some of us are teachers. Some of us are good with our hands. Some of us are great athletes. No one gift is better than another. In fact, it’s only when we pool our gifts together that we begin to see how great an impact we can have. (1) Individuality is discovering who you are meant to be so you can make a difference. (2) God knows all about individuality. That’s why the whole of His creation is filled with such unique detail. (3) He wants us to discover who we are meant to be. That means learning what our gifts are and then using those gifts for His glory—in other words, doing our part. (4) The difference we can make when we are all doing our part will be monumental. So today, focus on helping kids understand that they need to put what they’ve learned about individuality into action. Once you’ve discovered who you are meant to be, it’s time to go out there and do your part to make a difference.

“Yesterday in Large Group was our last visit to “The Great Safari”. Your preschoolers heard the Bible story about Moses and the two courageous spies. They learned when they are afraid that God is with them.

Need to Know: When I’m afraid, God is with me.

Memory Verse: “Do not be afraid for I am with you.” Genesis 26:24b

Motions: When I’m afraid (hands beside open mouth), God (right fist down at side) is (left fist down at side) with me (point thumbs to self).

Bible Summary: Numbers 13–14 God told Moses to send some men into the Promised Land, so Moses chose 12 spies to check out the land and the people who lived there. When the spies returned, they brought back fruit to show the land was good. But ten of the spies were scared and warned Moses the people in the Promised Land were strong. The Israelites were frightened. The other two spies, Joshua and Caleb, told the Israelites not to be afraid, because God was with them.

THIS WEEK AT HOME: Ask your child about Moses and the two courageous spies. Ask your child what were some of the examples that we used in class today. We talked about how sometimes that a big dog, the dark (nighttime) or even a storm can scare us. But remind them that God is always with us when we are afraid.

Review: Everybody has something they can use to help others, but it’s not always obvious. The trick is finding out what you can use to make a difference. (1) Individuality is discovering who you are meant to be so you can make a difference. (2) God demonstrates His individuality by creating everything in the universe with His unique brush stroke. (3) We were created with His unique brush stroke, too. All of us are different, and all of us have a purpose in His plan. (4) We need to figure out our part in His plan so we can be active participants in leading others closer to Him. This week, help kids to recognize that they do have talents and abilities that can be used to help others. Sometimes they just have to look for them!

Bible Summary: Exodus 19:16–20:17 God came in a cloud of lightning and thunder and called Moses up to the mountain to talk. He gave Moses ten rules He wanted the people to live by. The first four rules tell people how to show love to God. God said, “You shall have no other God before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” These rules showed the Israelites how to love God.

Review: REVIEW EXODUS 19:16–20:17. God wants us to show love to others. It seems like such an easy concept, doesn’t it? Most of us believe we show love to others at least fairly well. God felt so strongly about showing love to others that He focused six out of the Ten Commandments on this subject. When we read those last six commandments, it’s easy to let ourselves off the hook. Few of us would say we have murdered, given false testimony, stolen, or coveted anything that really mattered. But try rephrasing those commandments: Love your parents. Don’t hate. Don’t lie. Keep your promises. Don’t steal. Don’t be jealous. Maybe you don’t say negative things about your neighbor—but you’ve refused to go over to their house to say “hi.” Maybe you haven’t had an affair—but you have broken promises. Maybe you haven’t stolen something from a store—but you’ve taken things off a coworker’s desk. God knew we needed these commandments. This week, ask yourself, “How can I obey what God is asking of me and truly show love to others?” Be encouraged. God knows we can’t obey on our own strength—but in His, we can.

THIS WEEK AT HOME: Ask your child about the Ten Commandments (God’s Rules for us). Today we learned that God gave us ten special rules to follow and obey. And the last six rules help us show love to others. Remind you child this week of their special words God [point up] wants us to love others [spread hand from left to right]. Review: If asked, most people would probably say they want to have an impact on their surroundings, to leave their mark, or to really make a difference in others’ lives. Do some give up on that idea because they don’t consider themselves equipped to do much good? Do we excuse ourselves because we don’t have enough money? Do we get so caught up in the everyday things that we aren’t aware of the impact we could have through those everyday things? Maybe we don’t realize—or we forget—how God created us. That’s why we’re talking about individuality this month, which is (1) discovering who you are meant to be so you can make a difference. (2) God, the Creator of the universe, created each and every one of us with unique qualities, right down to our DNA. He created us with intention, in other words. (3) He wants us to recognize our individuality, because (4) we are the only ones in our exact situation with our exact qualities and those qualities could be exactly what we need to meet the needs of the people around us. Just like the situation Epaphroditus found himself in. Our lesson yesterday helped kids see that being in the right place at the right time can put them in the position of helping someone else, which can make all the difference.

Bottom Line: When you take care of others, you can make a difference.

Review: READ EXODUS 19:16–20:17. Consider all the times in a single day that a child must choose to obey. Maybe he wants to go outside and play, but mom asks him to come inside because it’s too cold. Maybe she doesn’t want to hold dad’s hand to cross the street, even though dad knows it’s safest. Or maybe he wants to go running down the hall with a sucker in his mouth, even after someone says “no.” Whatever the circumstance, children have a lot of rules placed in their lives to help them. When you ask a child to obey, he or she can choose to do otherwise. When the child does choose to obey, you feel that child is showing you respect, authority, or love. God has placed certain rules and boundaries in our lives He asks us to obey. When we obey, we grow closer to God. Obeying is one great way we can show love to Him. Pick the commandment most challenging to you. Think about the times you are tempted to break it. Admit your fears and weaknesses to God and ask Him to help you love Him through your obedience.

THIS WEEK AT HOME: Ask your child about the Ten Commandments (God’s Rules for us). Today your children learned a Bible story about Moses. Review: Basically, a virtue is something God does in us to change the world around us. As you read the next paragraph, you’ll notice some numbers. Here’s what they refer to: (1) the virtue definition. (2) The fact that God created that virtue and exemplifies it. (3) God instills that virtue in us as He shapes us to become more like Him. (4) God uses that virtue in us to influence and impact our families, friends, and neighbors. As others notice the virtue being lived out in our lives, we have more opportunities to tell them about Jesus. As they come to trust Jesus, they’ll influence others as well. See the cycle?

In the culture we live in, celebrity goes hand in hand with how good you are at something. Just consider what’s on TV. Reality shows to see who can sing, dance, or cook better. There are game shows to see who can answer the most trivia questions. Sporting events to see who can run faster, jump higher, or drive across the finish line first. As a result, kids might think you have to be stronger, smarter, or more talented than everyone else in order to make a difference in the world. But thankfully God doesn’t just work through people who are better at something to make a difference. He works through our peculiarities, too. So this month, we’re talking about (1) individuality, which is discovering who you are meant to be so you can make a difference. (2) God is one-of-a-kind Himself. There is no one like Him. (3) And He wants us to be who He made us to be, making a difference in our individual ways. As we follow Him, He’ll make an even greater difference through us. (Think about the difference God made in Paul and Onesimus’ lives as a result of the everyday process of getting to know each other.) (4) When we use what we have now (even if it’s “just” a kind word to a lonely person or a helping hand to someone who needs it) instead of waiting around to be stronger, smarter, or more talented, there’s no end to the difference God can make through us.

Need to Know: We can love God by obeying Him.

Memory Verse: “This is love for God: to obey His commands.” I John 5:3

Motions: We can love [hug yourself] God by obeying [thumbs up] Him.

Review: EXODUS 3–4. The NIV Life Application Bible says: Moses made excuses because he felt inadequate for the job God asked him to do. It was natural for him to feel
that way. He was inadequate all by himself. But God wasn’t asking Moses to work alone. He offered other resources to help (God himself, Aaron, and the ability to do miracles). God
often calls us to tasks that seem too difficult, but He doesn’t ask us to do them alone. God offers us His resources, just as He did Moses. We should not hide behind our inadequacies,
as Moses did, but look beyond ourselves to the great resources available. Then we can allow God to use our unique contributions. Friends, God does not ask us to go anywhere
or do anything without providing His help. God asks us to obey and go where He leads, trusting Him to provide everything we need. When we do, God does great things through us and for us.

THIS WEEK AT HOME: Ask your child how can they obey at home this week? (Allow children to respond: make my bed, wash the dishes, brush my teeth, etc.)Have them draw a picture for you to remember how they can obey. (Give children time to draw their pictures.) Say to your child when we obey, we make God happy. Remind them that on Sunday they learned that we can love (hug yourself) God by obeying (thumbs up) Him.

Bible Story: The Word on Wisdom (benefits of wisdom) Proverbs 22:3

Review: It’s the fourth week of the month. By now, we’re sold on the idea that wisdom is pretty important. We’re getting wiser and wiser by the minute. But there’s a catch. (1) Wisdom is finding out what you should do and doing it. (2) God is the wisest being in the universe, but we wouldn’t know that if we didn’t see His wisdom in action. (3) God does want us to be wise, to study His Word, and to seek His will. But all that studying and seeking would be for nothing if we didn’t actually DO the wise things we learned about. (4) It’s when we put our wisdom to work that we see its true benefit—to influence change in the world around us for the glory of God. This week it’s time to send the kids away with a mission: to actually do the things they’ve learned. And it’s also a good time to remind them that the search for wisdom never ends. For the rest of their lives, there will always be something new to learn.

Bible Story: God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah Genesis 12:1-9, 18:1-15, 21:1-7 The Beginner’s Bible
Motions: God (point up) always keeps His promises (slap hands on knees).

Review
READ GENESIS 12, 17, 18, and 21. The Bible is filled with amazing stories that show us something incredible about the character of God. Take, for example, the promise God made in the story of Abraham and Sarah. Abraham obeyed when God called. Even though it may have been hard, he trusted God’s new plan for him and left his friends and home behind. He was faithful to God. However, Abraham did have trouble believing that God would give him and Sarah a child in their advance years. But God was faithful and fulfilled His promise in time by granting Abraham and Sarah a baby.

When you take time to read scripture, you learn more about who God is. In the story of Abraham and Sarah, we see the impossible happen when God gives Abraham a baby at the age of 100. And it’s only the beginning of God’s promise to create a great nation from Abraham through which He will bless the world. God sees our past, our present, and where we are going in the future. He will keep every one of His promises to us, no matter how impossible or unrealistic they may seem. Put your trust in a faithful God.

This Week At Home: Ask your child this week about the promise that God made to Sarah and Abraham.

Bible Story: A Wise Woman (the Queen of Sheba visits Solomon) • 1 Kings 10:1-13

Sometimes we do things that aren’t that smart, and when we look back on what we did, we realize the error of our ways. Then we see other people who don’t seem to have the same struggles as we do. Don’t you wish you had the information those guys had before you got into trouble? We need wisdom. (1) Wisdom is finding out what you should do and doing it. (2) And we know that we can go to God for wisdom, because He knows everything. (3) Plus, God wants us to have wisdom. That’s why He provides us with people in our lives who can guide us to the wisdom we need. (4) And who knows? Maybe someday, other people will want to come to us for that kind of wisdom.

This week At Home: Encourage your child to search for wisdom, because it’s a treasure that will be with them forever.

Review:

READ GENESIS 3. Can you imagine what the world would look like if children made
the rules?
• Thou shalt eat pizza and candy everyday.
• Thou shalt not take a bath.
• Thou shalt play with your friends until you don’t want to anymore.
• Thou shalt not clean up your toys.

As much fun as those rules would be, aren’t you glad that God ultimately decided the rules? God makes the rules and wants us to obey Him, because He loves us and desires only the best for us. There are times in our day when we struggle and find ourselves disobeying God. In those moments, tell God you are sorry and ask for His forgiveness. Then, have courage and apologize to any person you may have hurt. Be encouraged. God loves you, is with you, and always helps you do what is right!

This Week at Home:
Talk with your child this week about ways they can obey God and you.

Review:

As our children grow, they are going to be pounded by a barrage of suggestions for the best way that they should live. But what is the best way? Do they do what their friends do? Do they do what they see on television or in movies? Where do they turn? This month, kids will be learning about (1) wisdom—finding out what you should do and doing it. (2) If anyone knows what we should do, it’s God. “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Romans 11:33, NIV) God was wise enough to create the universe and everything in it, so it should be Him that we go to when we need answers. (3) Not only does wisdom come from God, He actually wants you to have wisdom. When you make wise choices, it helps you avoid danger, find success, and “make your paths straight.” (4) And when you demonstrate God’s wisdom, others will notice, leading them to seek that kind of wisdom for themselves.

This Week at Home:
This week, make the kids aware that God is someone that they can go to for wisdom, through prayer, through their spiritual leaders, and by reading the Bible. Also, review the refrigerator door handout with your child this week for some great conversation starters at the dinner table.

Bible Story: Story of Creation, Genesis 1-2, The Beginner’s Bible
Memory Verse: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
Motions: God (point up) made everything (spread arms wide) and we (clap) can (clap) take (clap) care of it (clap).

Review:

The Bible reveals the fascinating story of how God made everything.
It recounts in brilliant colors the true story of creation. Then God formed man from the dust of the ground, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life—and the man became a living being (Genesis 2:7). A little while later, God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, took one of his ribs, and made a woman (Genesis 2:22). Right there, in the glorious Garden of Eden, the first two people were formed and breathed their first breaths. Ever wish you could read the amazing details of how you were made? You can. Check out Genesis 1:27. It says you were made in God’s image. Then look up Psalm 139. It says that God formed your inmost being in your mother’s womb, and that you were wonderfully and fearfully made. Spend time this week thinking about the unique and beautiful way in which God made you. Then thank your Maker, the God of the Universe, that you can read in His word the true account of how He made you and everything in this world.

This Week at Home:

Elementary – Virtue “LOVE”

Need to Know: Talking to God changes things.

Bible Story: Stay Tuned (Jesus prays) John 17: 1-26

Review:

We’re focusing on a “faith skill,” the faith skill of prayer (dialoguing with God, both public and private). There are all kinds of things kids need to understand about talking with God: you can talk to Him anytime, anywhere, about anything. You can ask for help, you can thank Him for what He’s done, you can praise Him for who He is, you can ask for forgiveness. You can pray for yourself, for others, or about your circumstances. You can pray solo; you can pray with others. Jesus modeled all these ideas and more for us. But ultimately, He showed us that talking to God changes things. So today, focus on helping kids learn about prayer AND what it does. Stay tuned.
